Community Pride May Meeting

ONE INDIVIDUAL… ONE NEIGHBORHOOD… ONE COMMUNITY

Scheduled for 6:00PM this Thursday, May 21, at the 6th Street Recreation Center is the monthly Apalachicola Community Pride Partnership meeting.

On the agenda are monthly reports from the organizers of the community garden, adopt-a-block program, neighborhood watch, community redevelopment agency, and project impact.

In addition, plans to reconstruct Apalachicola State Bank will be available for review, as well as a discussion on marketing the city’s new flag and working as a community to ensure a maximum count during the 2010 census.

The Community Pride Partnership is a group of Apalachicola residents that has begun actively working together to address quality of life issues throughout the city. The only prerequisite to joining is having enough pride in ones community to see positive things happen.

ONE INDIVIDUAL… ONE NEIGHBORHOOD… ONE COMMUNITY

There will be an Apalachicola Community Pride Partnership meeting tomorrow Thursday, April 16 at 6:00PM in the Battery Park Community Center.

This town hall style meeting will afford residents of the community the opportunity to give input on possible uses of the recently acquired Apalachicola High School building and to take part in a discussion on implementing a neighborhood watch program to help combat illegal drug activities in the city.

There will also be a discussion on Citywide Economic Development and an update on current city projects.

Mark your calendars today and make plans to attend this all-important community meeting.

A call for Community Volunteers

The Apalachicola Community Pride Partnership Program is calling for volunteers to help with a wide variety of community projects aimed at fostering a sense of ownership, belonging, and pride within our community.

To accomplish this important task, we need a group of volunteers from every neighborhood within the City.

At present, we are targeting two distinct projects:

First, we are looking at implementing an Adopt-A-Block program and we need block Captains and a crew to canvass the neighborhood in which they reside to identify overgrown lots, dilapidated buildings, abandon vehicles and other infrastructure problems that exist and to report the findings back to the overall group at the monthly Community Pride Meetings.

Secondly, we need volunteers of all ages to participate in the development of a community garden to be located off 8th Street where the old City trailer park used to sit. The community garden will give residents the opportunity to reflect on their shared and individual experiences and provide an environment where understanding and friendship can grow as well as flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

For more information on the activities of the Apalachicola Community Pride Partnership Program, contact Betty Taylor-Webb, City Administrator at 653-9319 or email apalachadmin@fairpoint.net.

Community Pride Partnership

As one of my initiatives, City Officials created the Apalachicola Community Pride Partnership Program as a means in which city officials, residents, and business owners could work together to find solutions to the common problems associated with the public consumption of alcohol, late-night loitering and loud music that surrounded existing businesses.

Because of these problems, a schism was beginning to develop between the residents and business owners. That’s when City Officials and Staff formed the Community Pride Partnership Program to bring about immediate harmony between the two groups while continuing our efforts to encourage more business development in the City.

Since its infancy, the program has gained the support of both groups and has expanded its initial scope to include providing activities for pre-teens, installing adequate street lighting, and establishing an ordinance that address-overgrown lots and dilapidated buildings.
